Course Description
The course HIV and AIDS in Healthcare is designed to provide working knowledge to physical therapists and physical therapist assistants concerning HIV/AIDS. This course provides a basic understanding of the virus; it’s transmission, treatment protocols, safeguards in patient treatment, and the CDC process used in case of accidental exposure. Information is provided concerning the history of the virus and statistics of exposure worldwide and across the United States. Updates on the impact of the Affordable Care Act for individuals living with HIV/AIDs is also included for healthcare workers to better assist patients and families affected by HIV/AIDS. Most importantly, the course guides the physical therapist through management of patients with HIV to improve the quality of life.
The purpose of the course, HIV and AIDS in Healthcare is to provide clinicians with a working knowledge of the virus and methods for safe patient treatment, processes to follow in case of accidental exposure, and treatment ideas to help improve the quality of life for those living with HIV/AIDS.
Course Goals and Objectives
Following this course the student will be able to:
- List most utilized methods to diagnose HIV/AIDS.
- Summarize treatments utilized for HIV and AIDS.
- Utilize the CDC protocol in case of accidental exposure.
- Utilize safe protection techniques when providing patient care.
- Understand effects of physical therapy in conjunction with HIV/AIDS.
- Assist HIV/AIDS patients in obtaining information concerning the Affordable Care Act and how it can assist those patients.
